Why I Started Only One Way Up
I started working in the trades at 18 and graduated as a Journeyman Carpenter in commercial construction. With construction having the highest suicide rate compared to other occupations, it was easy to see that others were struggling. From waking up at midnight to be on the job site by 2am for a massive concrete pour, to graveyard shifts because of public safety, or even to a bear eating the lunch I brought at 6am, working in construction demands adaptability and flexibility.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand - both with my coworkers and myself - the mental health battles that comes with such a demanding and dangerous work environment. When there’s not enough time to participate in the things that bring you joy, it can be hard to see a path to achieving the things you dream of. Through this, I grew a passion for empowering others to achieve the life they deserve to live, feel more comfortable in their own skin, and to just be a safe outlet for people to go to.
